As a parent of an adolescent in drug treatment, I needed to learn a great deal about addiction and in a short amount of time. This book educated me on many aspects of recovery that I would not have received otherwise. Most helpful to me were the discussions on the Stages of Change model of treatment, triggers, and the importance of family involvement in recovery. This book gave me solid information, and hope for success.
There is a wealth of information in this book to help parents of adolescents and young adults with chemical dependency. It is more practical than preachy but still has has sound theory behind it. It helped me a great deal when my son was going through rehab. I can't guarantee that my son will never use again - no one can, but I can feel good that I did the best that I could. Having a child in rehab can be very disorienting and it's useful to have a guide to stay grounded through the process. This book gave me valuable tips for managing myself during my son's rehab and since that time. It's a paradox that the best way to help your child is to help yourself.
This is a must read tome for anyone(everyone) that would like or need to understand the landscape of "substance use, substance abuse, substance abuse disorder" and everything in between. And even though it's directed at parents, this tome is an excellent reference manual for anyone associated with, or knowledge of someone that is struggling either this disease or supporting someone who is. This is also handy as a first hand reference manual for someone trying to help themselves with this disease. If you don't read anything else rather than rely on innuendo and "what you were taught" start here. This can help. It's helped us.
As a family therapist specializing in addiction issues, I am so thrilled and grateful that this book was written and shared as a resource for families and professionals who don't understand addiction and desperately want to.
I found this book to be an extremely accurate description of what I have encountered over ten years of working in residential treatment with adolescents and young adults. Jim Savage does an outstanding job of organizing information that can be overwhelming for families and other professionals who are unfamiliar with the treatment process. So many families I have encountered have gone through the treatment process more than necessary due to not having enough information. Had they had access to this book, that might not have been the case.
Jim's clear explanations and descriptions of what to expect before, during, and after the treatment process, will give families the information to make the best decisions for themselves. In my experience, the scenarios he includes are very true to life, and offer a helpful model for families to refer to when they find themselves in similar situations. A must read for any parent who has or had a teenager struggling with addiction issues!
This book was a fantastic resource for us. I wish we'd had it a year ago. I recommend it to anyone who suspects their child may have a problem with drugs or alcohol. Very practical and straightforward.
A must have for anyone who truly wants to understand what their teen is going through when battling addiction.
My family told me about this book that they received at their son's residential rehab facility. So well written and eye opening with much practical advice. Would hope that it would get into the hands of high school counselors and houses of worship for educational purposes and to enable parents to recognize and be proactive earlier in their loved ones journey.
