I've been in the business world for almost 40 years and I found this book to be a very useful guide to the practical problems that business people face either in a work setting or in private life. The framework provides clarity - understand the problem and realize that there are always tradeoffs and considerations that have to be lifted up consciously and dealt with. I have read Peter Senge's work and have used his principles as well. I see Brooke's work as a very practical way to quickly bring Senge's critical thinking into a decision. Just this past week, I used this framework with an experienced colleague to take a vague question like "Should we be doing Big Data" into "What important problem are we trying to solve" - moving from the hype to the executable. I highly recommend this.
I must state upfront that I consider Dr. Glenn Brooke to be a good friend. So I am biased. But, even if I did not know a single thing about Dr. Brooke, I would love this book. We are busy people. There is so much information vying for our time and attention. We can benefit from the "bottom-lining" of quick reads. Five Questions is just such a information resource. I like simplicity. We too often over-complicate ideas. Dr. Glenn Brooke presents a formula of decision-making which can be used in any venue. He presents his ideas and 3 excellent case studies to apply those ideas. Please allow me to use his 5 questions to present my case that you should read this book (1) What problem am I trying to solve? We too often fail to get to the root of our problems, so we solve the wrong problems, or, worse, we create even greater problems, and this book allows me to better understand the why? of my decision-making; (2) What am I optimizing for? This question creates prioritization in my life, and I am optimizing for a clearer understanding of my problems -- and potential solutions -- by reading this book; (3) What premium am I willing to pay for __________________? Reading this book calls me to "measure the cost" of my decision-making, creating value for my life and the highest prioritization for decision-making; (4) How does this help my organization? Five Questions helps me to be crystal-clear in my work; I will keep these five questions in my daily tickler file, to regularly review the questions which should guide my thinking and decision-making, thus bringing value to the organization; and (5) to our customers, my answer to Glenn's 5th question "How does this help my customers?"
