New York Times WellBlog regular contributor, Danielle Ofri has been praised for turning the triumphs and trials of medicine into riveting and compassionate stories. This e-book exclusive edition offers 98 pages of her best work.

This eBook original exhibits Danielle Ofri's range and skill as a storyteller as well as her empathy and astuteness as a doctor. Her vivid prose brings the reader into bustling hospitals, tense exam rooms, and Ofri's own life, giving an up-close look at the fast-paced, life-and-death drama of becoming a doctor. She tells of a young man uncertain of his future who comes into the clinic with a stomach complaint but for whom Dr. Ofri sees that the most useful "treatment" she can offer him is SAT tutoring.  She writes of a desperate struggle to communicate with a critically ill patient who only speaks Mandarin, of a doctor whose experience in the NICU leaves her paralyzed with PTSD, and of her own struggles with the fear of making fatal errors, the dangers of overconfidence, and the impossible attempts to balance the empathy necessary for good care with the distance necessary for self-preservation.  Through these stories of her patients, colleagues, and her own experiences, Intensive Care offers poignant insight into the medical world, and into the hearts and minds of doctors and their patients. These stories are drawn from the author’s previous books and one is from her forthcoming book, What Doctors Feel How Emotions Affect the Practice of Medicine.

Intensive Care A Doctor Journey eBook Danielle Ofri

If you've ever wondered about the emotional toll of being a medical doctor, read this short, but revealing, book.

While this is must-reading for anyone who has a loved one who is a physician, it is also an ideal resource for every patient who wants to know more about the psychic efforts involved in training for this demanding profession. Yes, medical students, interns, residents and fellows must get by on little sleep, massive amounts of studying and work hours that test their very breaking point. But you may not realize the just-as-intense emotional experiences physicians endure with so many of their patients, especially those who die.

Danielle Ofri, M.D. trained for 10 years at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, where she is now employed. She has a gift for storytelling and relates fascinating and heartbreaking stories about patients she has encountered in her many years at this busy city hospital. What makes the book unique is that each of the stories is told from the doctor's perspective.

Written with grace and compassion, this is an extraordinary, pithy book that will give patients even more respect for their healers.

Intensive Care A Doctor Journey eBook Danielle Ofri Reviews

This was a well-written and insightful book. Reading it made me appreciate how hard good doctors work.
Loved it. What a journey into a physicians life. She can be my doctor anytime. Compassionate physician when most would never not. Exceptional .book written by this important doctor.
I loved the book. It was compellingly absorbing and emotional at times. Ms. Ofri is a wonderful writer. She brings both the intellectual aspects of medicine and the humanity of patient care amazingly alive.
I really enjoyed this personal account of the inner life and the pivotal experiences of this woman M.D. It reminded me of my long-ago medical training, and was very well-written. A very engaging description of the doctor's perspective; it is an enjoyable and informative read for anyone on either side of the bed (or medical treatment).
I am terrible at reviews but I do know a kind, intelligent and wonderful author when I read one. Having physicans in my family I see just how much Dr. Ofi brings to her profession and patients. I will read every book she has written. She is one in a million.
I am not a doctor or a nurse, I simply like medical stories and this one I liked it very much. A very sensitive writer and doctor, who simply loved her profession. I was able to feel with her, specially when she was troubled by her decisions and faced with death and suffering, when she was able to cry with the Chaplin in a very moving story of the young mother who died so abruptly and unexpected. Congratulations
I've read every book this woman has written. She is not only extremely intelligent but expresses herself so
beautifully!
She is caring and insightful. I am just a fan of hers and am always delighted when she publishes another book. i also receive a blog of hers from New York University where she teaches.

If you are interested in medicine and doctors, she is a must on your reading list!
